Ausanee Podiums! The Asian Cycling Confederation MTB Championships comes to Melaka, Malaysia for 2009.
This is the race on the UCI race calendar where racers in the asian continent come to compete and earn their UCI points.
The sleepy suburb of Muzaffar Heights was transformed by the organisers,Malaysian National Cycling Federation (MNCF), into a small racing arena of sorts.

Among the contestants qualifying for the race were our very own Fakawi Banshee Team riders Stanly Jalip JR riding for Malaysia in the Elite men's category and Ausanee Pradupyard flying Thailand flag in the Elite women's category.)

Represent!

MNCF organisers are no strangers to organising UCI level races in the past especially in road and xc events. However, they were like noobs when it comes down to organising downhill races at international standards.

The event was run almost half-heartedly by the organisers, with little publicity and hype in the media. Most importantly, the race track was built not according to UCI standards, with input from local downhillers being brushed aside.

The short trail(not meeting the UCI minimum distance of 1.5km) carved into Bukit Beruang (Bear Hill) required a whole lot of pedalling and even had sections of climbs on it! In the minds of the organisers, downhill bikes had 1 to 2 inches of travel..with bar ends maybe?

Our rider who has been training for months prior to the race was sending out S.O.S messages to us because it was virtually impossible to race the track on his full blown Banshee Legend DH bike. Fakawi Banshee team members were furiously building up a lightweight Banshee Rampant 4X bike for him to race on.

News of the pedally course did not escape the riders of other countries. The Japanese team even brought a hardtail to the course.

The organisers received a well-deserved kick in the saddle area on the day before the seeding race when the UCI technical delegate from the UK arrived for the trail inspection. The MNCF trail was given a big red "F" and the organisers were ordered to build a new proper downhill trail or the race was off. He did however did his part by walking the whole of Bukit Beruang with the organisers and planned out a new race route for the racers.

The army was called in (literally) and a new sweet DH track was built within hours, just in time for the race the next day.

new track!
brand new track!

There were sighs of relief from the DH riders and also frustration for other riders who have spent months training on their lines on the old track. Now everybody was competing on the same level. The local riders have lost their home ground advantage. Bikes with double crown forks were dusted off and were prepared for battle.

One thing about building new trails at this time of the year with the Monsoon rains pouring down every evening is that riders will be promised one hell of a mud fest. But heck, when you have to race, youhave to race!
